6 Awesome Slack Tips & Hacks

Slack is one of the best task management applications available today. It’s a multi-purpose communication tool that, if you know how to use all of the features, will completely replace any other communication, collaboration, or time management program you’ve ever used.

For any Slack user, we’ve compiled a list of the most helpful Slack tips and tricks. If you’re new to the app or a seasoned veteran, there’s something for everyone on this list.

Send Users Private Messages From Anywhere

6 Awesome Slack Tips & Hacks

You don’t have to hop from one Slack chat to another or check for someone’s name among your team members to send a direct message to them. You can instead send a short message to them using the command /msg @username from anywhere in your workspace.

6 Awesome Slack Tips & Hacks

Simply type it into the message window and hit the send button. Slack would then send it to the user as a direct message, taking you to a private chat with them.

On Slack, you can mute channels.

Although it’s important to keep in contact with your coworkers, you might find that some of the Slack channels aren’t as important. The good news is that you can silence every channel’s alerts without exiting it.

6 Awesome Slack Tips & Hacks

One method is to change the channel’s settings. Choose Mute #channelname from the Conversation settings button in the top right corner.

The Do Not Disturb Mode can also be used to silence all alerts from all platforms. Tap the bell icon in the top-left corner to turn it on. You may set a strict time limit or even automate the process by using the do not interrupt schedule.

Organize all of your unread messages in Slack.

Slack can get messy if you’re part of a large team or organisation. When you have several channels and alerts, it’s easy to miss anything important if you don’t check your Slack for a day or two. Then you’ll be loaded with notifications.

With a useful tool called All Unreads, you can better organise your Slack workspace. Preferences > Sidebar > Additional Options can be used to configure it. Then select Display All Unreads from the drop-down menu. This will open a thread in your sidebar that allows you to skip to all unread messages from all Slack channels you’ve entered.

You can also limit the conversations that appear in your sidebar to just those that are unread or that you have begun. To do so, choose Unreads and Starred Conversations instead of All from the Sidebar Settings menu under Appearance.

Set Reminders with Slack Bot

Slack is a multi-purpose collaboration tool in and of itself. However, with the right Slack bots, you can do even more. They’re Slack applications that can help you finish different tasks in less time and with less effort.

6 Awesome Slack Tips & Hacks

Slackbot, for example, can be used to remind your future self to do something. Go to Direct Messages and choose Slackbot to set a reminder for yourself (or another team member). Type in the chat box:

/remind @username or #channelname when something is coming up.
