What Does INB4 Actually Mean?

December 31, 2020 by Elizabeth Anderson Leave a Comment

INB4 is an acronym that represents:

In Before.

It doesn’t describe everything, and that’s because INB4 can be used appropriately online in a particular way. You can’t simply pin it somewhere in a phrase to replace the words “in before” and assume that when you upload it on social media, everyone will understand precisely what you say.

How INB4 Is Used?

INB4 isn’t an acronym that you’ll find posted somewhere on the internet. In particular, only if you’re a fairly engaged member of a reasonably popular online message board (or at least a lurker), then maybe you already know what INB4 means.

It’s because INB4 is often used, usually as a response to someone else, in a conversation. This is why, in online message boards, it’s such a major trend as each subject shared by a user is intended to begin a conversation, showing a string of comments from other users beneath.

Members of the message board generally use INB4 preceded by a word or statement to anticipate an apparent reaction or event that would almost certainly be said or performed by someone else. In other terms, they get the comment “in before” from someone else when someone types INB4.

Saying “INB4” Versus Saying “First”

INB4 is equivalent to the theme of “First” found across various social platforms. People who tend to access their social feeds coincidentally as soon as a very famous profile they follow shares latest posts is offered with the chance to be the first commenter and will always post the word “First” just to show off before other comments begin to pour in.

INB4 functions the same way as stating “First,” but a statement still accompanies INB4 (whereas “First” is the only word users will type so they can post their comment as quickly as possible). To see how INB4 really functions, check out some of the explanations below.

Examples of INB4 in Use

Example 1: Let’s assume that a member of a message board posts a new subject of conversation that is against the rules and guidelines of the forum. Perhaps there are bad words or a link to an improper website involved.

Before the moderators of the message board see the subject and remove it, a person who happens to see it can post a comment to the string stating something like:

“INB4 the mods delete this”

The person who answers with their INB4 response is expecting action in this situation. They can also clearly answer with INB4 b&, which is a phrase many members of the message board use as an abbreviation for “in before ban,” indicating that it is possible that the person who posted the subject will be suspended.

Example 2: Let’s suppose that a member of a message board begins a new discussion on how he came home to learn that his dog ruined his device entirely. Before checking whether it had ever happened to someone else, he describes the destruction that he discovered.

One user agrees to post the following after a couple of users post their comments to the post:

“INB4 doge meme”

The consumer foresees that someone would share a photo of the doge meme as a joke in this case.

Where to Use INB4

INB4, as stated earlier, is an abbreviation usually used on message boards by particularly the ones where a lot of nerds and geeks hang out. Think 4chan, Reddit, YouTube, and boards concentrated on geeky subjects such as gaming, information technology and computers.

Odds are that users would not have any idea what you mean if you want to use INB4 on a message board with a group of fitness lovers, brides to be, foodies or scrapbookers. This is an anonymous abbreviation with a special place on the internet, and it is quite a geek-centric message boards!
